Welcome to Lisa Katt Watson's Voice Studio!

I'm delighted that you visited my website! Choosing private singing lessons is a big decision, whether you plan to make a career out of singing, or just want to learn how to sing better for fun. Here are some ideas of what to expect from voice lessons in my home studio:

Philosophy

I am absolutely a believer that EVERYONE can sing!

It is incredibly rare for someone to be truly tone-deaf. Just like everyone can run and dance, everyone can sing! Some may have more natural talent (similar to running or dancing), but everyone has the physical ability to sing. How you develop that ability and improve on your natural talent depends on 1) receiving training and coaching from a singing expert, and 2) practicing on a regular basis using the strategies you've learned from your teacher/coach.

There is a very real psychological component to singing, especially in front of other people. That is because your instrument is a part of YOU; it is unique! You can trust me to first emphasize what you are doing well, and then to give you honest feedback with kindness. I correct mistakes, but I also ask a lot of questions to make sure you are conscious of how to self-correct. Not only do I want to train you to be an excellent singer – I want you to have the confidence to sing in public knowing how to master your own voice.

Structure of Lessons

My lessons emphasize classical voice technique with proper posture, low thoracic/abdominal breathing, pure vowel production, and forward resonance with a lifted soft palate. This technique is also incorporated into a "healthy" belt singing, when performing musical theater or pop/jazz music that requires that singing style. I include ear training, theory and sight singing into students' studies whenever possible to promote whole musicianship. I am also available for specific audition and performance coaching.

We always begin with some warmups: a combination of physical stretching, breathing, and vocal exercises. I use this time (about 10-15 minutes) to focus on technique, letting you know when the voice sounds free, released and in tune. Then the rest of the lesson is devoted to song repertoire: we use a variety of musical styles, focusing first on your current vocal range and abilities, and then stretching into more challenging song literature as your voice grows.

The main goals of my teaching are to create a strong and secure foundation of breath support and control, to release the tension that inhibits the natural beauty of the voice, and to foster vocal health and longevity. The atmosphere in my studio is always warm and inviting!
